The grass is greener...is it? - 2

Here are the other 2 things I have learned about "greener" grass - where it is grass

Sometimes the grass has been "greened" i.e. touched up to look greener. This is very similar and yet different from the first point. In this, the actual situation has been embellished to make it more attractive. Unfortunately, I've seen too many people who have changed companies or countries under exaggerated or unrealistic expectations. For some, their family or friends have not been completely honest with them; for some their family and friends have been completely honest with them but they disregard it based on the superficial information they read on the internet.

In other cases, the grass has been well-groomed consistently... and this means that there is a cost associated with that green grass. In fact, if you pay close attention or even probe a bit, you'll find out that the water bill is also higher on the other side. For instance, you may see/know and possibly envy someone who has a really cool job with high visibility to Senior Management and other perks. Upon probing you would likely discover that the high visibility to Senior Management = low visibility to her family and friends. Spending time in the C-Suite reduced that time she had for the "H-Suite" (Home & Happiness Suite). I once had a mentor who was very accomplished and I wanted to be like her. During one of our chats she mentioned how much she cherishes the time she spends with her family over the weekend - because she does not see much of them during the week. I thought about what was was important to me and decided that I was not willing to pay that price to make my grass that green...
So yes, sometimes the grass is actually much greener. The questions you need to answer for yourself are:
Are you willing to bear the associated cost?
Even if you are willing to, can you actually afford to?
It would be helpful, in answering the questions, to seek a second opinion from someone you trust before accepting any opportunity offered to you.
